CRANKY MARMOT · breadcrumb trail

This is a breadcrumb, not an emergency alert. If you're worried, call them, then 911.

What the words mean

Participant
Participant — shares their location and sees everyone.
Observer
Observer — sees everyone, shares nothing.
Last heard 3:41 PM
The newest breadcrumb that reached the server. This is the normal state. Breadcrumbs come every few minutes, and less often while they sit still or the battery is low.
✓ Finished 3:41 PM
They ended the activity and chose to tell you they are done. A line after the time is their own note.
Activity ended 3:41 PM
They ended the activity without a message, or a full day passed with no breadcrumb. Nothing more comes until they start another activity.
Battery low at 2:05 PM — phone probably off
The last breadcrumb said the battery was almost empty. A gap after it is expected.
Silent since 2:10 PM — no breadcrumb for 45 min
No breadcrumb for longer than expected, and they did not end the activity. Most often the phone has no signal and no open sky for satellite (a canyon, thick trees), or it is off. Breadcrumbs taken in the meantime are kept on their phone and arrive later, marked with a dashed outline. This page cannot tell which of these it is.
back by 5:00 PM
The time they said they would be back. These words stay the same when that time passes. If the activity is still on 30 minutes later, this page adds a “Past back-by” line (next entry).
Past back-by since 3:30 PM

Past your back-by time, everyone in your activity and your safety contacts get an alert. When one of them taps I'm on it, the others see it.

The alerts go to phones with the Cranky Marmot app. This page sends none: it shows the line while it is open.

Paused 1:05 PM · back 1:20 PM
They paused their location for a while. Nothing is recorded while they are paused, so the trail shows a gap. Their back-by time still counts.
Pause ended 1:20 PM · nothing heard since
The pause they chose has run out and no new breadcrumb has arrived yet. Usually the phone has no signal. If none comes, this turns into Silent.
Marker
Marker — a stem with a square head: a note someone left at a spot.
Meet-up
Meet-up — a flag: a place to meet. People with the app can say they're coming.
Private marker
Private marker — a ring head: only on that person's phone; never shown here.
Dashed stem, hollow head
Dashed stem, hollow head — removed, called off, or over.

Cranky Marmot shows what the phone last sent. It cannot tell whether someone needs help, and it cannot call anyone. If you are worried, call them or call 911.
